Understanding the most common causes of semi-truck accidents is essential for drivers, fleet managers, and safety directors. Many serious crashes are preventable — and knowing the risk factors allows carriers to implement targeted training, maintenance, and operational controls before a tragedy occurs. 1. Driver Fatigue
Fatigue is consistently identified as one of the leading causes of serious truck crashes. 8. Poor Weather and Road Conditions
Ice, snow, wet roads, fog, and high wind all dramatically change the operating parameters for a heavy vehicle. Speed and following distance must be adjusted for conditions — the HOS rules do not change in bad weather, but drivers may invoke the adverse driving conditions exemption to extend their driving window if unexpected conditions are encountered.
